C4TR-POLG study

This study aims to improve clinical trials for mitochondrial disease, specifically for POLG-related diseases which often cause balance and co-ordination issues. The goal is to find the best way to measure and track symptoms over time, helping clinicians to evaluate potential treatments more accurately.

What is this trial about?

The C4TR-POLG Study is a research study funded by The POLG Foundation. It’s taking place at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Newcastle Hospitals) and is managed by Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University.

The study aims to find out more about POLG-related mitochondrial disease. It aims to look at movement, balance and co-ordination problems associated with this condition. It also aims to determine the best ways of measuring how this condition progresses (changes with time).

Who can take part?

We are planning to recruit 20 individuals (aged between 16 and 75 years) with a confirmed genetic diagnosis of POLG-related mitochondrial disease into the study which will take place at the Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) in Newcastle upon Tyne.

What does taking part involve?

Participation will involve undergoing assessments at three time-points over 12 months. Assessments include tests of balance and walking, clinical examination and completion of questionnaires. Participants will also be assessed in a specialist lab known as a gait laboratory and will be asked to wear sensors to monitor their everyday activity levels. Each study visit will last approximately four hours.

Who will benefit?

Having better ways to measure disease progression will help doctors and researchers. People with POLG-related mitochondrial disease can be monitored more accurately. Design of clinical trials to test new treatments can also be improved.
