Liz accepts MBE on behalf of entire 'Lily Family'
Plenty of people over the years have felt that our wonderful Founder and CEO, Liz Curtis, deserves a medal for all she's done to help people with mito. Well, now she's got one!
Liz has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, for services to people with mitochondrial disease. It's an incredible recognition, and another big step in raising awareness about the condition.
Liz is accepting the honour on behalf of all people affected by mito, and everyone who has supported and donated to our charity over the years. Without you, The Lily Foundation would not exist.
The royal recognition is among the highest awarded to citizens for outstanding work in their communities, and comes after a remarkable year for Lily.
Throughout 2020 we worked with ITV's Coronation Street to bring mitochondrial disease to the attention of millions of UK households. Liz reviewed scripts from the show to ensure the storyline accurately reflected the experiences of real families affected by mito, and personally advised the actor Jane Danson, who has since joined the charity as a Patron.
All this was achieved as we adapted to the Covid pandemic, providing vital support to hundreds of vulnerable families, while developing new fundraising strategies to stay afloat.
Thanks to all our incredible supporters (that's you!) we exceeded our aims, and were able to invest further in scientific research. We are now very proud to be the largest charitable funder of mitochondrial research in Europe!
Congratulations to Liz, and to everyone who helped get us where we are today. Together, we're making a difference.
